E-Learning Training FAQ

E-Learning courses are self-paced online courses that can be accessed via a regular web browser. Most courses include a good number of videos, but the majority of content will be available as text, balanced with a good proportion of labs. The labs allow students the opportunity to practice concepts covered in the course. Students are given 12 months of online access to the course materials. If the student completes the course before the 12 month period expires, they can still access the course.

Web browser with internet is required to play the course. Lab exercises may require additional configuration, e.g. setting up a Linux machine. Students may view setup requirements for their course and labs by clicking on the specific course in the list at right to find the requirements for that specific class.

You have 12 months from the date you purchase an E-Learning course to access and complete the course. After 12 months, your access to the course will be closed.

E-Learning courses may be accessed online via a web-browser only. No course manuals or other offline access is available for E-Learning courses.

To start an e-learning course, please login to My Portal with your LF Account credentials, go to the In Progress tab, and click the Start e-Learning button. Clicking on Start e-Learning will launch the course. If you are accessing a Linux Foundation course via your employer’s site, please check out the E-Learning Support document for more info.

Please try to login to My Portal with your LF Account credentials. If you cannot recall your LF Account username and/or password, you can click on the Forget Password link and follow the reset steps. When you request a new password, an email will be sent to the email address associated with your Linux Foundation Account. That email will be addressed to your username at the top and provide a link to reset your password. Please be sure to login with your username and new password. Your best resource for questions regarding labs and course content will be the class forum set up for your course at forum.linuxfoundation.org. In addition to participation from other students, the forum is reviewed periodically by course staff. The forums are also where notices and updates regarding the course are posted, so it is good practice to check the forum regularly.

You may access an e-learning course for up to 12 months from the date you purchased, even if you have already marked it as completed. To access such courses, login to training.linuxfoundation.org/portal, and click on the Course Completed tab. The "View e-Learning" button will be available for any completed courses that are within the 12-month period of registration.

Login to My Portal and click on the Certificates of Completion tab. You should find certificates for completed classes there. If you are looking for a Certificate for the LFS101x Intro to Linux class or other free Linux Foundation course delivered by edX, login to the course on edX.org and follow the instructions in the first chapter.

The verification tool will only work for certifications such as the Linux Foundation Certified System Administrator (LFCS). The verification tool is not intended to verify course certificates of completions. In order to achieve certification (e.g. LFCS or LFCE), you must pass the associated certification exam. These exams are proctored and require candidates to verify their identity. We invite you to learn more about The Linux Foundation’s certification programs.

We recommend that students clear their cache on a regular basis before re-launching a course. This clears up many issues that were not exhibiting previously, and it ensures that you are seeing the most up-to-date course content and labs (e.g. in cases where course updates have been deployed). Also, while the course player does work in most browsers, there may be video-related issues with Mozilla Firefox on some Linux distros. Additionally, we recommend visiting the forum set up for your specific course at forum.linuxfoundation.org on a regular basis. Important announcements regarding the course are posted here, including announcements about course updates. It's also a great way to see what topics are currently being discussed by students and instructors for the course.

A lab instance is not provided with your course registration. In general, lab exercises are designed to be run natively, using a virtual machine, or a public cloud provider. Detailed instructions to set up your lab environment are provided in the course.

If you are using a cloud provider like GCP or AWS, you should be able to complete the lab exercises using the free tier or credits provided to you (with a few exceptions, which are noted on the course enrollment page). However, you may incur charges if you exceed the credits initially allocated by the cloud provider, or if the cloud provider’s terms and conditions change.
