Meet Hardeep Singh Tiwana, Golden KubestronautFrom Raw Linux Installs to Kubernetes Expertise

For more than 25 years, Linux and open source have been the threads running through Hardeep Singh Tiwana’s career. What began in 2000, with a self-assembled desktop, a first Linux install, and plenty of trial and error, has grown into deep expertise in large-scale cloud platforms and enterprise Kubernetes. Along the way, he has built a comprehensive portfolio of professional certifications, including the highly prestigious Golden Kubestronaut recognition.

From First Installs to a Home in Open Source

Hardeep’s story began long before containers and managed Kubernetes clusters were even conceptualized. It started with a copy of Linux For You magazine, which included a CD for installing Red Hat Linux 6.2. From there, learning Linux meant reading whatever documentation he could find, breaking things, and then figuring out how to get them working again, including accidentally wiping his Windows partition while attempting a dual-boot setup. Rather than setting him back, that experience reinforced the value of learning by doing, a mindset he carried forward into his Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) training and beyond.

As his professional responsibilities grew, Hardeep began pursuing certifications as proof of the skills his clients relied on. Earning his RHCE in 2005 reshaped how he approached certifications; not as boxes to check, but as a way to structure his professional development and validate real-world capability.

Linux Foundation Education, Kubernetes and the Cloud

When the ecosystem shifted toward the cloud, containers and microservices, Hardeep turned to Linux Foundation Education’s Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) certifications and courses to guide his learning and deepen his expertise. “The CNCF certifications matched the tools I was using for real customers, including Kubernetes, observability, GitOps, and platform engineering,” he said. “Each certification exam provided a focused learning sprint with a clear finish line.”

“For each cert, I mapped the domain to production problems,” Hardeep said. “I thought, how does this affect upgrade strategies? Changes in cluster design? Where can a small change in configuration save a team hours of troubleshooting?” This helped him build strong learning habits along the way: set goals, build labs, test under pressure, and teach others to do the same.

Helping Others

Hardeep sees Golden Kubestronaut recognition as the culmination of years of sustained learning with Linux Foundation Education. “It is not about a single moment or a single exam,” he said. “It reflects long-term engagement with Kubernetes training, exam preparation, and hands-on work that translates directly to real-world success.”

For Hardeep, that recognition also carries a responsibility to help others grow. “When you are a Golden Kubestronaut, people see you as a practical, rather than a theoretical expert,” he said. “That is why I think it’s important to support others in their professional development.”

At AWS, he has turned that belief into action by building in-house workshops, including the Amazon EKS Finhack Workshop and the Karpenter Workshop. He also recently led a public-facing session, Automate Your Kubernetes Clusters: Amazon EKS Auto Mode Workshop.

He helps teammates build real-world skills by creating CKA-aligned curricula, recording walkthroughs, and designing labs that push learners to think through real failure scenarios rather than simply memorize commands. When teammates ask where to start, he often points them to specific Linux Foundation Education courses and exams, then helps them translate those objectives into practical projects.

At its core, Hardeep’s message to anyone working to build and prove their skills is simple. “Pick certifications that align with the work you want to be trusted with, commit to the hands-on parts, and then go beyond the syllabus,” he said. “Contribute to open source, write about what you learned, and support others who are a step behind you.”

Client Impact

In his day-to-day work, Hardeep sees the patterns reinforced through Linux Foundation Education certifications and training show up everywhere. From multi-account strategies that keep blast radius under control, to Kubernetes architectures that clearly separate responsibilities, to backup and recovery designs that align directly with business objectives rather than being treated as an afterthought.

Because his certification journey spans the full stack, he can move comfortably from Linux internals to Kubernetes APIs to GitOps pipelines and observability. That breadth makes it easier to connect technical decisions to cost, reliability, and team productivity, while also making it easier to explain those decisions to stakeholders who are not working in kubectl every day.

A Journey Still in Motion

Looking back, almost every major inflection point in Hardeep’s career connects to Linux and The Linux Foundation in some way. Early installs that built intuition. RHCE on RHEL 4 that validated core skills. CNCF certifications that sharpened cloud native expertise. Golden Kubestronaut recognition that reflects a long-term commitment to Kubernetes.

Looking forward, Hardeep’s focus remains consistent. He said, “I intend to keep learning and turn that learning into better systems and stronger support for the engineers building what comes next,” he said.
