Helping Build Open Source Talent Across the Globe

SAN FRANCISCO (July 11, 2024) – More than 500 recipients from 111 countries have received scholarships as part of the 2024 Shubhra Kar Linux Foundation’s LiFT Scholarship program. Scholarship winners are able to enroll in a Linux Foundation course and certification exam at no cost. Since 2010, more than 3,000 scholarships have been awarded by Linux Foundation Training & Certification.

This year, the Foundation received more than 3,400 applications across 16 categories focused on a range of open source technologies as well as skill and experience levels. The average age of awardees is 27, ranging from a 16-year-old in the “Open Source Tech Teen” category to a 53-year-old in the “Unemployed Open Source Professional category”. Top awardee countries are:

  • India
  • Nigeria
  • Kenya
  • Pakistan
  • United States of America
  • Myanmar
  • Egypt
  • Bangladesh
  • Nepal
  • Canada
  • United Kingdom
  • Morocco
  • Ghana
  • Indonesia
  • France

“In reviewing this year’s applications, two things are clear,” said Clyde Seepersad, SVP and General Manager, Linux Foundation Training & Certification. “One, developing Kubernetes and Docker skills and knowledge is a major focus for early-career, open source professionals. And, two, today’s IT professionals increasingly see the need to include cybersecurity skills as part of their overall skill set, rather than as an IT specialty area.”

You can read profiles of winners from each LiFT Scholarship category here.

The program honors the memory of long-time Linux Foundation CTO Shubhra Kar.
