Turning a Passion for Open Source into Regional Impact
Nicola Noviello has a drive to continuously learn, explore new technologies and expand his skills. His goal to develop resilient, secure, and easy-to-analyze systems and applications overlaps with a more heartfelt motivation: coming home. As a chief technology officer and an adjunct professor, his passion for Kubernetes has enabled him to return to his home region of Molise, Italy and encourage the next generation to put down roots as well.
Foundational IT Passion
Like many in the IT industry, Nicola’s journey began as a teenager with an old computer and a lot of curiosity. “I remember hearing about Linux and becoming determined to understand how it worked,” he said. “That spark of interest grew into a passion that eventually became my profession.”
Nicola started out as a freelance system administrator, managing infrastructure and systems. From there, he broadened his skillset by moving into technical support and then into development, initially focusing on mobile, then software engineering as a whole. He said, “Throughout my career, I’ve never lost sight of my foundational passions for infrastructure and security, which remain the common thread running through my entire professional journey.”
Staying Hands On
Over the last 15 years, Nicola has held technical lead and chief technology officer positions. Now CTO of Over SpA, he defines the company’s technology strategy and communicates it to stakeholders and executive leadership. He ensures that technical decisions align with the business vision and guides his team to make choices that deliver clear, measurable impact.
Despite his leadership role, Nicola remains deeply connected to the technical side of his work. “Whenever I get the chance, I still like to get my hands dirty with code or some technical experiments,” he said. “It’s a way to stay close to the heart of innovation.”
He is also an adjunct professor, teaching mobile programming and web and cloud security—subjects that bridge his professional expertise with his passion for mentoring the next generation of developers and engineers. His decision to teach is rooted in a deep connection to his home region of Molise, a small area in Italy he returned to after time away.
“It’s common for young people here to leave in search of better opportunities, but I chose to stay and answer the call to teach as a way of giving back to my community,” he said. “In the classroom, I show students that it’s possible to stay, to put down roots, build a community, and spark a cycle of learning and opportunity right here.”
“My role has also given me an important platform to champion open-source software,” Nicola added. “I constantly emphasize its growing importance and how contributing is vital—not only for the sustainability of the software itself, but also as a great training ground for anyone aspiring to an IT career. It’s a message I never stop repeating to my students and the members of the CNCF Cloud Native Molise community.”
Certifications Keep Nicola’s Skills Cutting-Edge
Nicola only started his Linux Foundation certifications a couple of years ago and is already an active champion. He has all five Kubestronaut certifications:
- Kubernetes and Cloud Native Associate (KCNA)
- Kubernetes and Cloud Native Security Associate (KCSA)
- Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA)
- Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD)
- Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist (CKS)
He has also earned his Certified Open Source Developer for Enterprise (CODE), Prometheus Certified Associate (PCA), and Certified Argo Project Associate (CAPA).
For Nicola, Kubernetes isn’t just a skill set — it’s a passion. Beyond multiple certifications, he’s marked that commitment with a tattoo of the Kubernetes helm.
“For me, earning a certification strikes the perfect balance between validating my expertise and the personal satisfaction of overcoming a challenge,” he said. “When you use a technology it’s easy to develop a bias and focus on what you’re familiar with, overlooking other approaches or functionalities. Studying for a certification, however, forces you to broaden your perspective, fill in knowledge gaps, and understand a technology in its entirety, not just the parts you use day to day.”
Nicola prepared during evenings and weekends, dedicating significant time and energy to his studies. “For every chapter or topic I cover, I spend at least twice as much time on practical experiments and labs, even with the technologies I use daily,” he explained. “I firmly believe it’s the only way to truly grasp how technology works. Reading a book or watching a course is never enough, you have to roll up your sleeves, experiment, fail, and try again. This method hasn’t just prepared me for certifications; it has also made me more confident and intentional in my job.”
Certifications are a Force Multiplier
Nicola is clear, certifications aren’t just personal milestones, they create real business value. “Deepening my expertise has helped me build more robust, reliable products,” he said. “That’s had an impact on my own growth and the value I bring to the company.”
He sees certifications as a strategic asset for individuals and teams. “Having a team with certified, verifiable skills gives us a competitive edge. It signals professionalism, proven capabilities, and dependability, all of which build trust with clients and stakeholders.”
His advice for anyone aspiring to become a Kubestronaut is to focus heavily on hands-on practice. “Experiment, try new things, and don’t be afraid to break stuff. If you don’t have access to your own cluster, killercoda.com is an excellent playground for practicing in a safe environment.”
Nicola sees continuous learning and certifications as core to staying sharp and growing, no matter where his career path leads. “Whether I continue down this management track or decide to return to a more hands-on technical role, certifications ensure I stay connected to the technology, keep my skills current, and maintain a verified, recognized level of expertise,” he said. “I’m always open to pursuing new certifications, and let’s be honest, the Golden Kubestronaut beanie is just really cool.”
